Info for Faculty

Cornell faculty members play two vital roles in maintaining the success of CIW:

  1. As participating faculty:
  2. Each semester a small number of Ithaca-based professors offer elective courses in CIW, either individually or in concert with one or two colleagues. These courses ordinarily meet once per week, early in the evening on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, or during the day on Friday. CIW welcomes proposals for courses from many different disciplines, and encourages faculty members to discuss course ideas with our Director, Robert Hutchens, Professor of Labor Economics, ILR School (phone: 255-3359; e-mail: rmh2@cornell.edu).

A stipend is paid to the individual professor if his or her CIW course is taught as an add-on to the regular teaching load, or to the professor’s department if it is taught as part of the regular load. In either case, expenses for travel, lodging, and meals are reimbursed by CIW according to University guidelines.

CIW maintains video conferencing equipment, which can be used in conjunction with on-site teaching.

Teaching in CIW is a rewarding experience. Students in the program are qualified and motivated, and the ambience of the small CIW classroom is enhanced by the personal bonds that develop within the residential community. Faculty members often take time to conduct research in Washington, and to enjoy the city’s vast (and growing) cultural and culinary resources.

  3. As teachers and advisors on the Ithaca campus:

Many Cornell undergraduates know little or nothing about CIW. Others fail to consider seriously how they would benefit from a semester in Washington. Informed faculty can help enhance the Cornell experience of their students and advisees by bringing CIW to their attention, and by discussing its possibilities within their particular programs. We invite you to familiarize yourself with CIW by reading through the rest of this website, and by giving our Director a call (see above).

Faculty can help also with ongoing CIW promotional activity. If you are willing to distribute our brochures to your students, or if you teach a large class that might benefit from a very brief personal presentation from our Director, please give us a call or send us an e-mail. Please contact Robert Hutchens, or our on-campus office (Peggy Stevens) at 255-4090.

Any help you can provide in reaching out to Cornell students (of any college or major) would be greatly appreciated.
